My Jacksonville, Florida bridge series would not be complete without the distinctive bright, cerulean blue-colored Main Street Bridge. It absolutely defines the city’s skyline and connects the Southbank of the river to the heart of downtown Jacksonville. The bridge’s official name is the John T. Alsop Jr. Bridge, named after the longest-serving mayor in Jacksonville’s history. The unique steel cantilever bridge has a vertical lift system that allows boats to pass underneath while the entire road span of the bridge remains parallel. The Main Street Bridge serves as a colorful backdrop for many events which I have had the pleasure of attending, in particular, the city’s elaborate fireworks display discharged from a nearby barge every 4th of July.
