WELCOME!
I am excited you have accepted my invitation to participate in my creative process. I have decided to do something I have never done before, collaborate with someone (possibly a stranger) on my art. In this case, I am asking for your input on the title of the artwork featured above. The art is mixed media on canvas, 54″ x 60″ or 137.16cm x 152.4cm in size.
The painting depicts the famous southwest corner of the Erechtheion, the sacred ionic temple of Athena on the Acropolis in Athens, Greece. The Erechtheion was built from 421 to 406 BC, and it is made of Pentelic marble which came from the nearby Mt. Pentelicus and was celebrated for its pure white appearance and fine grain. The corner contains a porch that originally featured six impressive female statues known as the Caryatids that support the roof’s weight on their heads. Today, all the Caryatids have been replaced by replicas. Five of the original Caryatids are located in the Acropolis Museum in Athens, Greece and the sixth Caryatid resides in the British Museum in London, England. There is much controversy that surrounds what is referred to as the “Elgin Marbles”, a collection of fifty-six marble pieces, including one of the Caryatids, collected by Lord Elgin and his team in the early 1800’s. To this day, the Greek government continues to request the return of the collection from the British Museum with no success. Of all the incredible architecture I witnessed when traveling in Greece, the Caryatids – also known as the “Porch of the Maidens”, inspired me the most.
