My idea to somehow depict the four seasons of the year remained in an incubated state for years until I noticed a magnificent Live Oak tree in my neighborhood. Its anthropomorphic branches spanned perhaps forty feet in width. I had to paint it. As I began, the four seasons concept re-emerged. But, instead of painting four paintings, or four trees—the seasons would span a single tree—coloring spring to summer.
