Matthews Bridge ll

The Matthews Bridge was the first painting in my series of the seven bridges that span the St Johns River in Jacksonville, Florida. It practically sold off my easel as soon as it was completed. The painting on my website is currently available as Matthews Bridge II. While each bridge is unique in design and size, the Matthews Bridge, a very red, very long cantilever bridge, is particularly complex. I drove back and forth across the bridge several times attempting to understand the architecture and engineering. I learned that one of the best views of the city can be seen at sunset as you approach downtown.
The bridge is named after John E. Mathews, Chief Justice of the 1955 Florida Supreme Court who actually helped to secure funding for the bridge’s construction.
